Smart Men

He was much younger than I expected him to be. Much, much younger. I assumed he would be an older, distinguished-looking gentleman. This man who going to check and sign my schedule was in his late twenties. This was the French Revolution/Napoleonic professor? I swear to God, he was sitting with his hand inside his vest when I walked in his office.

He looked a little like Bob Newhart, and he sounded a lot like him, too. He was friendly and made easy small talk and encouraged me to join the history honor society. Other than that, I don’t remember much more that he said, but I left with an impression that he was funny, likeable, and with it. I bet he was a good teacher. Maybe I would sign up for a French history class before I graduated.

Four years later, I married him.
