Except for time when my children were growing up, holidays have always been marked by travel.
During my youth, every Thanksgiving, Christmas and often Easter was spent with either my father's family in NC or my mother's family in FL.
When my children moved far away, I traveled to see them during many of those same holidays. But recently we have started a new holiday travel tradition: visiting somewhere new together, often including extended family. We've spent Thanksgivings on the coast of Oregon and Christmases in the mountains of Colorado.
This year we're planning to visit Puerto Vallarta for the Christmas holiday. By returning to Mexico, we'll be marking the 20th anniversary of a trip to Cancun where we spent the first Christmas after my father's death and my husband's leaving.
Travel and the memories we make are the gifts we give each other now.
