Florida

Every time I cross the state line
I'm back in a place where
I'd like a tallboy beer please.
I left Florida in the fourth grade
but there's some quantum trace
of the state in my being: hours
breathing the soil in as I lay
and watched an antlion's den
left an animal memory in me
of the sea and the sand and
palmettos and bath, snakes, and bees.
I camped at the Cape and watched
rockets go to space from an inner-
tube in brackish inland waterways.
Terrazzo floors were the air
conditioners of my youth; when
I walk on concrete I think of
sleeping through hot summer
afternoons where the best that
could befall you would be
pop-up thunderstorms and
gutters full of water to stand
ankle deep in. Farm stores were
big and made the best ice cream.
